COMMUNICATING ONLINE
Newsgroups - What Is It?
The Usenet is a global
network of discussion groups better known as Newsgroups. Contrary to their
name, Newsgroups are usually not discussions of today's headlines
(although they can be), but rather collections of thoughts and rants on
any subject under the sun, including Usenet itself. Newsgroups are divided
into categories indicated by the first letters of their name. There are
many different category prefixes, but the main ones you are likely to run
into are comp (computer), sci (science), rec (recreation), soc (society),
and alt (alternative). Under these headings are thousands of
sub-categories, ranging from "alt.activism.death-penalty" to
"rec.music.makers.bagpipe" and anything in between (and beyond).
